The Anderton Boat Lift was reopened in 2002 after nearly twenty years closure caused by the corrosive salty Cheshire environment. However the lottery funded ‘restoration’ leaves it looking nothing like the original elegant 1875 structure, and operating differently than it had in the eighty years before closure! The large sloping tubes were added as strengthening in 1905 when it was converted from hydraulic to electric power, along with hundreds of tons of counterweights, gears, pulleys and beams. The lift is now hydraulically powered again, but much of the additional ironwork has been retained for ‘historical reasons’.
