Chirk aqueduct looking towards England

The Chirk Aqueduct (a UNESCO World Heritage site) on the Llangollen branch of the Shropshire Union Canal was built between 1796 and 1801 by Thomas Telford and William Jessop. The canal is carried in a cast iron trough which is hidden inside the masonry, almost as if the engineers were not confident of their new material. The railway viaduct stands 10 metres higher, the work of the Scottish engineer Henry Robertson in 1846-8 (rebuilt 1858) and carried the GWR mainline from Birkenhead to Birmingham.
