Chirk aqueduct looking towards Wales
£25.00
Chirk aqueduct looking towards Wales on the Llangollen branch of the Shropshire Union Canal carrying the canal across the Ceiriog Valley 20m below. The ten circular masonry arches of the structure each span 12m and are supported by masonry piers which are hollow at the top. The canal immediately dives into the 421m long Chirk Tunnel, proof of the hilly terrain which eventually was to prevent the canal reaching its intended destination in Chester. World Heritage Status was awarded to 17.7km of the Llangollen Canal describing it as a ‘feat of civil engineering of the Industrial Revolution’.
