Farmers Bridge Locks 2, Birmingham

The 13 Farmers Bridge Locks on the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal were built in 1787. The canal was intended to link the original Birmingham Canal with the Trent and Mersey and Oxford Canals, providing a link to London and the South. The locks became so busy that lighting was installed for 24 hour working. The toll house can still be seen where boats were ‘gauged’ so that the weight they carried could be measured and the tolls they must pay calculated.
