Gloucester Docks

Gloucester, at the normal tidal limit of the River Severn, has been a port since the Romans used it to support their Welsh Campaigns. In 1793 a 16 mile ship canal to Berkeley Pill was started to bypass dangerous bends and shallows on the river. Costs were underestimated and it only opened in1823 using public loans. Traffic boomed and the Victorian docks and warehouse facilities expanded until 1852 when the last warehouse, Llanthony Warehouse, was built. It now houses Gloucester Waterways Museum, the rest of the docks having been converted to an attractive visitor attraction with shops, offices and a working dry dock.
