Halfpenny Bridge at Lechlade

Halfpenny Bridge crosses the Thames at the southern end of the Gloucestershire market town of Lechlade. It has three arches, the main one spanning the river, and was built of beautiful Cotswold stone in 1792 to a design by James Hollingworth. The square toll house was built to allow the tolls to be collected, a ‘halfpenny’ being the rate for pedestrians when it was opened. The toll was abolished as long ago as 1839, but the name lingers on!
