Mather Bridge, Leigh

Mather Mill sits alongside the Leigh Branch of the Bridgewater Canal which was opened in 1799 as part of the Duke of Bridgewater's schemes to control transport between Manchester and Liverpool. However he did not see the opening of the final link to the Leeds and Liverpool canal in Wigan in 1820. The mill buildings date from about the same period, the lower building was the carding shed sitting parallel to the canal but set at an angle to the four storey main mill building. In the nineteenth century the skyline of Leigh was a panorama of cotton mills and smoking chimneys.
