Standedge Tunnel on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal is the longest, deepest and highest canal tunnel in Britain. Cutting through the heart of the Pennines, the tunnel is 5.2km[3.2mls] long, 196m[643ft] above sea level and 194m[636ft] below the surface. Fifty men lost their lives before it was completed in 1811 after 17 years of hard physical labour. Major roof collapses in the tunnel closed it to through navigation in 1945 but after a year’s worth of dredging and much structural repair costing £5 million it was reopened in 2001.
