Isis Lock, Oxford

Isis lock in Oxford sits on a short link from the Oxford Canal to the upper River Thames. A broad 1797 lock gave Thames barges access to Oxford but was rebuilt as this narrow lock in 1844. Through the bridge the canal heads north, a sharp right turn taking boats to the current terminus near Nuffield College. Below the lock Castle Mill Stream joins the Sheepwash Channel, a bywater of the Thames. A railway swing bridge here had to be wound open by hand to let boats through.
