The Regent’s Canal was only 13.8km[8.6mls] long from the Paddington branch of the Grand Junction Canal down 12 locks to the Thames. A part of master architect John Nash’s 1811 North London redevelopment plans it carried the blessing of the Prince Regent. However there were construction problems, water shortages and then money shortages after the Superintendent, Thomas Horner, disappeared with a large amount of investors’ money. Government unemployment relief funds completed the canal in 1820.
