Watford Staircase
£25.00
The 7 narrow beam Watford locks lift the Grand Union Leicester Arm 16m[52ft] to the Leicester summit level. Four locks are in a staircase sharing top and bottom gates. Built as narrow locks to save money, they were opened in 1814. There have been schemes to widen them from 2.1m[7ft] to 4.2m[14ft] ever since. They, with Foxton Locks at the other end of the summit level, are the main barriers preventing wide beam boats and barges reaching the waterways of the midlands and north from the broad waterways of the south. If the Foxton Inclined Plane is restored they will then form the only barrier.
