River Irwell Lock

This restored lock by the River Irwell in Manchester was the entrance to the long lost Manchester & Salford Junction Canal which ran for just over half a mile, mostly beneath the city streets, to a junction with the Rochdale Canal. The canal was opened in 1839 but it was expensive to build and maintain with a five hundred metre tunnel, four locks and 2 pumping stations on its short length. It was little used and closed to through traffic just 36 years later. Some of the underground sections are still intact, including under what was Granada Studios.
