The 250 metre Newbold Tunnel was built in 1829 when the Oxford Canal was straightened to remove many of the original loops, cutting 14 miles from its 91 mile length. One entrance to the original 125 metre tunnel can still be seen in the nearby St Botolph’s churchyard. In 2005 Rugby Borough Council and British Waterways installed 10 groups of coloured lights to create a ‘tunnel of light’ effect. It was first illuminated as part of Rugby’s ‘Diwali’, the Hindu Festival of Lights.

Where is it?
